Americans for Prosperity, the group that organized the rally opposing the enactment of the compromise state budget proposed by Gov. Jim Doyle, is not from Wisconsin. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C. And its roots and values are about as antithetical to those of the great state of Wisconsin as can be imagined.

Americans for Prosperity was founded in 2003 with money from one of the Koch Family Foundations, which have for many years been a prime source of funding for right-wing front groups and campaigns. The Koch Family Foundations rely on revenues from the vast oil and gas fortunes accumulated by family patriarch Fred Koch and passed on to his billionaire sons, Charles and David Koch.

The Koch family has a rich history of funding campaigns to pull the U.S. out of the United Nations, eliminate Social Security and abolish progressive taxation. And no one will accuse Americans for Prosperity of straying far from right-wing dogma when it comes to opposing tax fairness, government funding for programs to aid poor kids, and the dreaded "equality."

Levy opponents sue for right to spread false information

Levy referendum opponents in two Minnesota school districts where ballot measures were defeated this week are now claiming their right to free speech is under attack. They filed a lawsuit Thursday in U.S. District Court against a state agency in a preemptive move to stop school districts from suing them over the use of inaccurate information in their "vote no" campaigns.

St. Paul, Minn. — State law prohibits the dissemination of information aimed at defeating a ballot question if that information is known to be false. Alleged violations of the law end up before the state Office of Administrative Hearings.

Attorney Erick Kaardal claims that system is violating his clients' free-speech rights.

Robbinsdale Superintendent Stan Mack described the lawsuit as "amazing." Mack said he can't believe opponents would sue for the right to use false information in a levy campaign. He views the lawsuit as an admission of the tactics used in Robbinsdale.

Robbinsdale schools blame anti-levy agent from Iowa

Paul Dorr is an Iowa consultant who has built a reputation working to defeat school levy requests. He says he has helped to deny dozens of school levies and bond issues in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, South Dakota and Minnesota. In the wake of Tuesday's levy defeat, Robbinsdale school officials blamed a literature campaign orchestrated by Dorr and financed by a Robbinsdale anti-levy group, 281 CARE (Citizens Acting for Responsible Education). On Wednesday, Dorr referred questions to CARE, which did not respond to a phone call.

Administrators in districts that Dorr has targeted say he's a master of distortion and prevarication, but in an interview last month, Dorr said he serves a higher purpose: to represent school district taxpayers who are overwhelmed by organized support for school levies and who feel their voices won't be heard.

Voters approve MOST levy requests

Only one question in Stillwater passes, renewing funding; South Washington County faced no opposition

Voters were willing to fund schools in Washington County at their current level but were reluctant to kick in more property tax dollars for education.

South Washington County's request to extend $14.1 million in levies sailed to an easy victory Tuesday. And one of three ballot measures in Stillwater made its way through to renew an $8.9 million levy set to expire after this school year and add $1 million a year in new funding.

Stillwater levy supporters celebrated their victory after battling through a nasty and emotional campaign. Levy opponents faced attacks from an anonymous blogger posting information about their families and children. And people on both sides saw a rash of signs slashed or stolen from their yards.

"We're thankful that the first question passed so we don't have to dismantle our programs," Superintendent Keith Ryskoski said. "But it's disappointing the second and third questions didn't pass so we can make some improvements."

The passage of Stillwater's first question was a critical victory. If the expiring levy had not been replaced, at least 10 cents of every revenue dollar would have disappeared next school year, forcing about $9 million in budget cuts.

Better Schools Create Poverty in New Richmond

In a recent article posted at Onthebottomline.com a.k.a. ontheborderline.net, Blue in New Richmond addresses the issue of local poverty. I find it ironic, that rather than looking for cause of local working class poverty in the lack of living wage jobs in the area, Blue readily and gleefully points the finger at the public schools and the recently passed referendum.
Of course everybody knows how better schools directly contribute to low wages, NOT!
I've heard borderliners extol the virtues of tax cuts to create new jobs, yet for these working poor families, the invisible hand of the market seems to have passed them by without the magically anticipated effect of raising their standard of living.
Let's get real Blue, the Republican tax cutting efforts have done nothing for those at the lower end of the economic scale, but instead have concentrated more and more wealth in the hands of the affluent few. At the same time workers see stagnant wages, they also see rising fuel and health care costs which can be directly related to the failed policies of the current administration. These far exceed any increase in property taxes working poor residents in the New Richmond Area may encounter as a result of a recently passed referendum. How many min. wage workers, or working poor even own a home to pay taxes on? None that I know of.
You might make the argument that higher rents could result from land lords passing on their additional expense to their tenants. But any increase like this would be offset by Wisconsin's Homestead tax credit, and would pale in comparison to other rising costs in low income family
budgets. If Blue is truly concerned about the working poor he should vote for politicians whose policies make life for those at the lower end of the economic scale less difficult and not more. These policies would obviously come from a political party that has compassion rather than criticism and disdain for the poor.
Nice try at twisting the issue blue, but nobody's biting!

The post links to a story out of Omaha about a female teacher who has apparently abducted a 13-year old boy and was last seen crossing into Mexico.

A study released this week suggests that school choice isn't a powerful tool for driving educational improvement in Milwaukee Public Schools. Evidently the anti-public education lapdogs over at ontheborderline.nut missed the release of this study. Maybe they have been too busy trying to prove the child prostitution is the same a a child getting a hand stamped at school.

But more surprising than the conclusion is the organization issuing the study: the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute, a conservative think tank that has supported school choice for almost two decades, when Milwaukee became the nation's premier center for trying the idea. The institute is funded in large part by the Milwaukee-based Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, an advocate of school choice.


"The report you are reading did not yield the results we had hoped to find. We had expected to find a wellspring of hope that increased parental involvement in the Milwaukee Public Schools would be the key ingredient in improving student performance...there are realistic limits on the degree to which parental involvement can drive market-based reform in Milwaukee."

Capitalism At The Barrel Of A Gun

Murder and payoffs taint business in Colombia
Last month, a U.S. District Court judge formally accepted a settlement of the charges between the Cincinnati-based company and the Justice Department. After pleading guilty to a felony, Chiquita was fined $25 million and required to institute an ethics program to prevent future violations. The company said that it made more than 100 payments to the paramilitaries, which controlled large swaths of Colombia's principal banana-growing region, to protect its workers from attacks and that it earlier had paid left-wing guerillas for the same reason. The Justice Department says the armed groups Chiquita paid are responsible for "a staggering loss of life" in Colombia.

There Is A Big Difference!

Ruthless at ontheborderline.nut asks the following question:

"There were several cases of adults prostituting children reported recently. In Minneapolis a woman offered up her five-year old for oral sex and in Bloomington kindergarten teachers stamped VOTE YES on the five-year olds attending their classes. Is there any difference between these two cases? Not much."



Of course, Ruthless didn't make up this question. He was listening to the Jason Lewis Show on KTLK Talk Radio this afternoon. So here we have Ruthless dashing to his computer to parrot the words of Jason Lewis equating child prostitution to school referendums. I guess Ruthless lets Lewis do all his thinking for him and, my experience is that most listeners of right-wing talk radio let the radio hosts do the thinking for them.

The Elephant Has No Clothes

Our friend Chris at ontheborderline.nut has a current post with an interesting graph. He asks this telling question:

"Where in the constitution does it say federal taxpayers have to pay for any of the things the federal government has intruded into? To hell with controlling government growth, how about eliminating?"

This question seems to run along the same line the was discussed on a previous post here concerning Dr. Bill's conservative on the radio with Mike Church.

Notice the graph below. I've taken the liberty to box in the Reagan-Bush Sr., Clinton and Bush Jr. presidential years. In addition, I added approximate trend lines to show the direction of growth during the administration blocks.

Chris is equating federal spending per household with government growth. Notice how the trend lines go up in the R-B Sr. and B Jr. years and down in the Clinton years? Who would you say has added the most increase to the growth of government in the past 27 years?

Of course, its people like Chris that foam at the mouth about all those liberals spending us into socialism. Obviously, the truth is he might be foaming at the mouth, but he's talking out of his ass.

Through the wonders of the Internet and satellite radio, we have been able to capture the voice and wisdumb of local blogging genius Dr. Bill.

Now that you've listened to Dr. Bill, you will know that he has exposed the soft, white underbelly of the entire Republican strategy. To put it simply, Dr. Bill says the Republicans believe that cutting tax rates will increase the revenues flowing into the government coffers.

Dr. Bill has Mike Church stunned -- because Church actually has to think instead of belching phrases like "scumbag liberal bloodsuckers make me wanna puke."

Dr. Bill just raises the question, but doesn't provide the answer to his observation. Maybe you have to buy his book to get the answer.

What are the options that Dr. Bill doesn't tell us? Let's see...

1. The government to totally eliminated taxes. However, if the cuts already made has caused the revenues to come trickling in, eliminating taxes completely will cause the "perfect storm" that would result in the flooding of the government with so much revenues that it would totally drowned itself.

If this happens, it would ruin Grover Norquist's plans to shrink government to a size where it can be drowned in a bathtub. Instead the government would drowned in a flood of revenue of Biblical proportions on a scale that only Noah would appreciate.

2. The government could eliminate all loopholes and tax everything at 100 percent. This would eliminate all incentive for private industry to do anything and would make the government a self-perpetuating revenue generating machine that would provide an ever increasing flood of revenue that would get bigger and bigger as the government paid its employees larger and larger salaries, benefits and retirement options. The government would become so involved in trying to handled the flood of incoming cash and dispensing it to the citizens on the dole that they would no longer realize what a good time we are having. Eventually, the only people working would be the government workers and the rest of use would be basking in the autumn warmth of Alabama as we watch SEC games and ate governments peanuts purchase on the Internet. After the game, we would all gather round the victory fire and kid each other about how wrong Ayn Rand and Ludwig von Mises were about big government.

The Hudson School District had an historic opportunity to graciously invite (ME) Dr. Billiamson in to discuss and learn about how to effectively implement exactly what it is that Rudy Guiliani is speaking about. But this gang of looters is neither gracious nor truly interested in what is best for the children, they are merely interested in being an enabler of the monopoly and a mouthpiece for the unionized teachers. They were afraid of what (I) he had to say, afraid of the implications of choice... stunning. They therefore would not allow (ME) him to speak on the matter to the board in public - it had to be private session. My understanding is that (I) he said NO - (MY) his offer was to come in and provide a 15 to 30 minute presentation on how the district could get the job done but they said NO. Not in public, on camera where everyone could see it and decide for themselves its merit.

Instead of being at the forefront of educational excellence and true innovation they languish in the cellar of yester year where "bricks and mortar" are their sole criteria for quality.

We should all have an absolute contempt for each and every one who supports this system, and the last thing one should do is support any additional spending.

Voting NO to any and all referendums is the only moral stand one can take. Now, I (Dr. Bill) suspect Rudy would take issue with that to some degree but I (Dr.Bill) agree that, at the end of the day, there is no other way to dismantle this nightmare.

Dr. Shill Damnuson made a rare appearance recently. He slithered out from under his rotting particle board sign, donned his fishnet stockings, and agreed to be interviewed about his repeated use the same baloney he’s been feeding us for years. The discussion and interview were surrounding the soon to be forgotten book by Dr's Bubonic and Danielson, The Price of Spin. More on that (and Dr. Bubonic's interview) later, but these juicy comments are worth posting...

I. M. Gaseous: Dr. Shill, it is good to see that your new book is reaching all classes of people. I saw a couple of copies at the Goodwill store in Stillwater. Those of us who know you are totally amazed that a small mind like yours can hold so much. As always, it is a total honor to once again have the opportunity to suck up to you. I want to start this interview off from a local angle. Since you no longer live in Hudson and have no ties to it, you are obviously an unqualified expert on things on the borderline. That said, you obviously know a great deal about nothing and we were wondering if you could excrete a load of verb gibberish on the safety of the streets in Hudson?

Dr. Shill: The streets are safe in Hudson, it’s only the statist interventionist disguised as members of the community who make them unsafe. These people are seriously misguided atavists who will stop at nothing in their attempts to extinguish those vestiges of laissez faire, which have somehow managed to remain. Could I have some of those peanuts?

I. M. Gaseous: Dr. D., I understand you recently underwent some serious medical testing. What did the doctors find?

Dr. Shill: The doctors X-rayed my head and found nothing. In addition, they found that half of what I say is ninety percent bullshit.

I. M. Gaseous: I understand that you are upset about want has transpired in this country since President Bush took office. Could you share some of your views on the President?

Dr. Shill: The President is a low down scoundrel who deserves to be swiftly and soundly kicked in the curt by a jackass--and I’m just the one to do it.

I. M. Gaseous: I know you are totally and completely against any type of tax. However, you recently sided with Governor Doyle on his successful attempt to raise the tax on a pack of cigarettes. Please explain.

Dr. Shill: Like me, the reason is very simple. Smoking kills. If you’re killed, you’ve lost a very important part of your life.

I. M. Gaseous: As you continue your fight to make the universe a totally free market, do you feel you have finally come up with all the right answers?

Dr. Shill: You know I’m a humble guy and would never admit in an interview that I have all the answers. That said, I think we're on the road to coming up with answers that I don't think any of us is total feel we have the answers to.

I. M. Gaseous: As a longtime drinker of Republican Kool-Aid, do you think the party still offers the so-called “big tent” to the people of this country.

Dr. Shill: We offer the party as a big tent. How we do that within the platform, the preamble to the platform, or whatnot, which remains to be seen. However, that message will have to be articulated with great clarity and I'm obviously the one to do it.

I. M. Gaseous: Do you have any thoughts on the war in Iraq?

Dr. Shill: My position on Iraq is very simple. And I feel this way. I haven't spoken on it because I haven't felt there was any major contribution that I had to make at the time. I think that our concepts as a nation and that our actions have not kept pace with the changing conditions, and therefore our actions are not completely relevant today to the realities of the magnitude and the complexity of the problems that we face in this conflict. Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

I. M. Gaseous: What did you mean?

Dr. Shill: Can I have some more peanuts?

I. M. Gaseous: One of your local critics accused you of lying in one of your recent brain-numbing blog posts. What do you say to that charge.

Dr. Shill: I wasn't lying. I was using terminological inexactitudes.

I. M. Gaseous: Well, thank you Dr. Shill! You have been gracious to entertain a few questions.

Dr. Shill: You're very welcome, and I suspect you will have a great interview with Dr. Bubonic as well - he is a very bright fellow with some wonderful "diaper leakage"!

Hey OTBL: Some anti-tax people do more than whine

I find it interesting that the ontheborderline.nut pretty much just whine about taxes. They never really do anything. If they really believed what they preached, maybe they'd stand up and actually protest with some action. Hey, if you think your property taxes are theft, don't pay them.
