Solzhenitsyn mourns Rostropovich's death
MOSCOW. April 27 (Interfax) - Author Alexander Solzhenitsyn said
the death of renown cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich is a
bitter blow to Russian culture.
"The departure of Mstislav Rostropovich is a bitter blow to our
culture. They [the Soviet authorities] attempted to separate him from it
by force when they deprived him of citizenship thirty years ago," a
statement sent to Interfax by Solzhenitsyn on Friday reads.
"I can testify how it was painful to him. Meanwhile he glorified
Russian culture throughout the world. Farewell, beloved friend!" - the
statement says.
