It's A Sticks & Stones Kind Of Thing...

"At a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized, at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do," he said, "it's important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds."

President Obama
Tucson Memonrial Rally
(1/12/11)

"...In that, he is not so different from a broad range of voices on the Internet and talk radio. Over the last two years, all manner of paranoid ideas have found life in the right wing media: Barack Obama is a Muslim; Barack Obama is not an American; Barack Obama is the Antichrist. The Democrats want to set up death panels to kill off old people. The government is forming secret military units that will cart patriots off to internment camps. Progressives want to destroy America, kill capitalism, turn the USA into a Socialist police state and give the Southwest back to Mexico..."

So what part of the above isn't true???

Of course, one problem is that there is not one scintilla of evidence that the psychopath who killed and injured all those people in Arizona was influenced by - over ever even listened to - talk radio.

Like Josh Olsen, a high school friend of Laughner, told ABC Good Morning America: "He did not watch TV. He disliked the news. He didn’t listen to political radio. He didn’t take sides. He wasn’t on the left. He wasn’t on the right.”

That fact is, this left-wing and media concoction that the Arizona lunatic was influenced by conservative ideas is a massive narrative failure. The more we learn about the shooter, the sillier that silly idea becomes.

Even President Obama, in his excellent speech last night, seemed to recognize the nonsense and futility of the left wing smear effort. Good for him.

Sure Roadkill, it's all a left wing conspiracy bend on destoying the credibility of Glenn Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity and Sarah Palin.

Not doubt, Obama go coaching from his Kenya handlers on how to spin the Arizona pep rally ala Wellstone's memorial. I'm certain that the Reverend Jerimiah Wright and Bill Ayers where Twittering Obama as he stood at the podium.

I'm thinking whatever casue people to open fire on people at the mall, in the school or at the work place is what motivated the kid in Arizona.

The first person I talk after I heard the new bulletins last Saturday is a TEA Party gun guy. It was about 6 PM Saturday evening and he told me he was so relieved that this kid wasn't a TEA Partier. He said that would have wrecked the TEA Party.

I asked what he was. He said he was a pot smoking communist. How did he know that? Because his Facebook page says Mein Kampt is one of his favorite books.

He also told me that this would never have happened at a "Republican event." Why not? Because their would have been people packin' and they would have taken him out.

Of course, the whole thing happened in 30 seconds and one of the Congresswoman's aids was carrying. I think shooting a gun at a target is different than figuring out what to do when all hell breaks loose.

Sunny,

Please, take off your tin foil hat…there are no conspiracy theories here.

As to your “Tea party gun guy” friend, I think he’s an outlier with respect to the general reaction of the Tea Party movement. Most Tea Partier’s I know – and I know a lot more of them than you do – figured from day one that this guy was a nut-case. Moreover, not one of the Tea Party folk I know felt anything but sorrow for Rep Giffords and the other victims of this psychopath’s rage. Certainly none of them felt anything like relief…

Regarding that “pot-smoking” comment, your friendly neighborhood Tea Partier was probably referring to what Catie Parker - one of Jared Laughner’s high school friends -said about him, to wit: “He’s a pot-smoking leftist.”

Come on, Sunny: Do we have any evidence that Laughner was anything but a certifiable nutcase? Outside of Sheriff Dupnik, who postulated “sans evidence” within hours of the shooting that right wing talk radio was to blame for messing this kid up, we have no such evidence. And Dupnik is sounding more and more in-credible as more information trickles out regarding how messed up this kid was, how many problems he had had, and how many contacts had occurred between he and the police prior to the event.

I sure hope that the good sheriff was not trying to deflect attention from his own department’s history with this guy, which, as suggested by reports that are trickling out, indicate that they were aware of this guy and his condition long before the Giffords attack.

But be all that as it may; I think its best to wait and see what the investigation uncovers before we start trying to assess guilt and blame in this incident.

My initial thought on hearing the news bulletin was that it was probably some nut case. The is always my first thought.

The Mein Kampt comment was made to me six hours after the shooting. Obviously, the right-wing guy was jumping to some conclusions.

My previous comment was somewhat inspired by my random samplings of Limbaugh, Hannity, Jason Lewis and Laura I that day. Jason Lewis was the only one of the four that actually was the adult in this group.

I don't have cable or sattlelite TV and therefore don't waste my time or money on the so called "news" channels. I get it on the road on the radio.

Concerning the sheriff, your comments dovetail tightly with Limbaugh's and Laura I's. It's important to point out that the sheriff always pointed out that he was exposing his personal opinion.

What do you think about enacting a law to make those super-sized clips illegal?

Sunny,

I think you listen to too much right wing talk radio. I can only listen to so much of that stuff before I have to change stations. I never listen to Rush or Hannity.

I have thought a lot about the clip issue, and have to say that I think a limitation on large-capacity clips (i.e. those holding over 15 rounds) would not be an unreasonable restriction on our Constitutional right to keep and bear arms. It makes a lot more sense than that proposal to put a 1000 foot gun-free zone around every member of Congress - since the only people with guns inside that zone will be cops, criminals, and nutcases like Jerad Laughner.
