"Subjecting every citizen to surveillance and screening points actually will make us less safe, not in the least because it will divert resources away from tracking an apprehending terrorists and deploy them against innocent Americans!"-Ron Paul

I usually don't agree with Libertarians but Ron Paul is right on this point. We've spent billions on airport screening, and communications surveillance but we can't stop 12 million illegal immigrants from pouring over our borders. For anyone intent on commiting a terrorist act here, I don't think there are many real deterrents.
SD:
I don't think airport screening will stop the immigrants pouring over our borders. What I find sickening is that we spent billions on national defense and 19 guys with $40 worth of boxcutters took down the Twin Towers and put a big gash in the Pentagon.
Concerning the illegal immigrants from Mexico, it's not that the flow can't be reduced, it's that American's business community doesn't want the flow stopped. The cheap labor helps reap big profits.
It's interesting to see Lou Dobbs, John Birch and Ron Paul sharing the same bed on immigration. However, I don't think Ron Paul cares if we export all the good paying, manufacturing jobs to China.
666,
"I don't think Ron Paul cares if we export all the good paying, manufacturing jobs to China."
Are you sure about that? I was surprised to read how much Ron Paul
hate NAFTA and other so called "Free-Trade" agreements.
From Ron Paul's web site (http://www.ronpaul2008.com), he's what he says about:
1. American Independence and Sovereignty
So called free trade deals and world governmental organizations like the International Criminal Court (ICC), NAFTA, GATT, WTO, and CAFTA are a threat to our
independence as a nation. They transfer power from our government
to unelected foreign elites.
The ICC wants to try our soldiers as war criminals. Both the WTO and CAFTA could force Americans to get a doctor’s prescription to take herbs and vitamins. Alternative treatments could be banned.
The WTO has forced Congress to change our laws, yet we still face trade wars. Today, France is threatening to have U.S. goods taxed throughout Europe. If anything, the WTO makes trade relations worse by giving foreign competitors a new way to attack U.S. jobs.
NAFTA’s superhighway is just one part of a plan to erase the borders between the U.S. and Mexico, called the North American Union. This spawn of powerful special interests, would create a single nation out of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, with a new unelected bureaucracy and money system. Forget about controlling immigration under this scheme.
And a free America, with limited, constitutional government, would be gone forever.
Let’s not forget the UN. It wants to impose a direct tax on us. I successfully fought this move in Congress last year, but if we are going to stop ongoing attempts of this world government body to tax us, we will need leadership from the White House.
We must withdraw from any organizations and trade deals that infringe upon the freedom and independence of the United States of America.

So maybe Mr. Paul does want to protect US jobs? He doesn't mention China or job outsourcing. He being hailed by the likes of Free Market News (http://www.freemarketnews.com/).
Mr. Paul could strike a chord with a large cross-section of American voters. I think his attraction would be to blue collar voters and there will be a great deal of big money business cash pumped in to drown him out.
Andy --
If NAFTA truly was free trade the agreement would read something like the following:
"The United States has free trade with Canada and Mexico. No duties or taxes shall be imposed on any products traded between these nations."
But it's not. It's more about making a Euro-zone type area and currency (eventually), with all sorts of exceptions to the so-called "free trade". Free trade does not mean "loss of sovereignty". Most Libertarians are against such things once they realize that the names of the agreements are Orwellian, much like how we are staunchly against those communists in the UN.
CATO:
You're right.
The whole idea here was I think that we were suppose to sell American stuff to the Mexicans. One problem, we don't make much stuff anymore.
I'm starting to see a reason for some of the Libertarian opposition to NAFTA, WORLD BANK etc. These are tools of the economic elite Multi National Corps. to make American Laws invalid.
We are the world's second largest exporter, behind Germany. They overtook us two years ago, if I recall correctly. In bulk of items I'm sure China makes the most, but they make McDonald's Happy Meal toys, while Germans and Americans make high-end items, like airplanes and cars.
Never underestimate those Germans. NEVER underestimate those Germans.
And yes, these agreements go above our laws. The people of this country are no longer the rulers as we have to give up -- if even it is just a little -- our sovereignty over all things in this country to some organization that does not answer to the people of this country. The UN is a great idea for people to sit around and talk. But once they start making binding resolutions they have overstepped their authority -- basically they have nullified the authority of the American people. In whatever the subject, although much of it is about land usage and its "environmental impact". Treaties on "desertfication" make the UN the sovereign over most of the land in this world. Sure, there are puppets in between, but everyone follows their orders. We pass laws to abide by their resolutions. Four years ago, peace keepers were starting to be used on the offensive in Africa to "keep the peace".
Now you'll probably think I'm crazy but the UN is a large danger. And I think they actually do have WMDs at their disposal.
