US Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin has accused the Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama, of associating with terrorists.
She said he had been "palling around" with an ex-member of US-based militant group Weather Underground, which opposed the Vietnam War in the 1960s.
Mr Obama once served on a charity board with a member of the group, but he has denounced its activities.
A Democratic spokesman accused the Republicans of gutter politics.
"What's clear is that John McCain and Sarah Palin would rather spend their time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy," Hari Sevugan said.
Commentators say Mrs Palin's attack forms part of a broader Republican strategy to attack Mr Obama's character.
Denunciation
Speaking to supporters in Colorado and later in a Los Angeles suburb, Alaska Governor Palin said the time had come to take the gloves off.

Quoting a New York Times article, she attacked Senator Obama over his link to Bill Ayers, a founder of the Weather Underground, which waged a violent campaign against the Vietnam War.
The group was blamed for a number of bombings in the US in the 1960s.
Mrs Palin described Mr Obama as someone who saw the US "as being so imperfect... he is palling around with terrorists who would target their own country".
Mr Obama served on a charity board several years ago with Mr Ayers, who is now a professor at the University of Illinois.
The White House hopeful, who was a child when Weather Underground was active, has denounced Mr Ayers' radical past.

Hey, we all know William Ayers, domestic terrorist, who was photographed stepping on a US flag in 2001 for an article in the New York Times in which he said he had “No regrets” for his violent actions in the Weather Underground. Those actions included bombing the Pentagon.
And we also know that Barack Obama launched his political career at Ayers’ home, and served as chairman of the board of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, a foundation Ayers founded. We also know that Senator Obama was a director of the Woods Fund, a philanthropic organization in Chicago from 1994 through 2001. Ayers was a director for three of those years, including the final months of 2001, after Ayers made his comments to the New York Times.
Is this another example of Barack Obama throwing a former close colleague under the bus, as he as done with Tony Rezko and Jeremiah Wright? And his racist Grandma?

"I also know Bill Ayers. He worked with me in shaping our now nationally-renowned school reform program. He is a nationally-recognized distinguished professor of education at the University of Illinois/Chicago and a valued member of the Chicago community.
I don't condone what he did 40 years ago but I remember that period well. It was a difficult time, but those days are long over. I believe we have too many challenges in Chicago and our country to keep re-fighting 40 year old battles."

Oh and thanks for exaggerating Obama's association with Ayers. This is the best you got??? The country is on the brink of a depression after 8 year of the GOP at the helm and you find some obscure association with Obama on the board of a charitable foundation?
Here's a little more background on the exaggerated connection between Obama and Ayers.
"In the short term, the person who has most to gain by speculation about Obama's acquaintance with a former terrorist is Hillary Clinton. The former First Lady likes to present herself as "tested and vetted" after years of exposure to Republican attacks, in contrast to Obama, a relative newcomer to hardscrabble presidential politics. Such arguments resonate with Johnson, the counterterrorism expert, who told me that he is a Clinton supporter, although not involved with the campaign.
But the Obama-Ayers link is a tenuous one. As Newsday pointed out, Clinton has her own, also tenuous, Weatherman connection. Her husband commuted the sentences of a couple of convicted Weather Underground members, Susan Rosenberg and Linda Sue Evans, shortly before leaving office in January 2001. Which is worse: pardoning a convicted terrorist or accepting a campaign contribution from a former Weatherman who was never convicted?
Whatever his past, Ayers is now a respected member of the Chicago intelligentsia, and still a member of the Woods Fund Board. The president of the Woods Fund, Deborah Harrington, said he had been selected for the board because of his solid academic credentials and "passion for social justice."
"This whole connection is a stretch," Harrington told me. "Barack was very well known in Chicago, and a highly respected legislator. It would be difficult to find people round here who never volunteered or contributed money to one of his campaigns."
