According to one account, they got the name Purple Gang because they would threaten to throw purple dye and ruin the laundry of local dry-cleaning stores. You know the phrase from dozens of gangster movies: "Nice little shop ya got here. Be too bad if something happened to it." Purple Gang tactics are being used in Wisconsin. A public employee union local, embroiled in a battle with elected officials of that state, are now dragging in local shopkeepers - sending them letters demanding that they post signs in their windows supporting the unions or face a union boycott. Jim Haney, the outgoing head of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, a pro-business lobby, said the union effort was appalling. And he said the campaign would backfire.

Handwritten page was all state had behind $7 million figure

Madison — State officials' controversial courtroom testimony that protesters did more than $7 million in damage to the Capitol was based on a single handwritten page.

An open records request by the Journal Sentinel on the damage estimate turned up only one page of notebook paper listing costs written before the courtroom testimony. Other e-mails from state officials listing areas to check for potential damage also were released, but there were no others with any dollar figures written before the court testimony. "

In Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker’s battle with public sector unions may have some unintended consequences. Statistics show that in America, 35 percent of union members are registered Republicans. By engaging in this battle of philosophy that will do little to actually balance Wisconsin’s budget, Mr. Walker is hurting a large number of Republicans who voted for him for governor. Statistics will also show that a higher percentage of Republican union members actually go to the polls and vote than do Democrats. Mr. Walker received a lot of votes from the very unions he is trying to bust. So this situation in Wisconsin is far more complicated than anyone has been able to adequately address. How much damage is Mr. Walker willing to do to his own supporters to make himself a hero to extreme right wing conservatives? We’ll find out.
